Map Gotemba Trail

The Gotemba Trail departs from the Gotemba Trail Shin-5th Station and leads to the summit from the southeast side of Mt. Fuji on the Shizuoka Prefecture side (Gotemba City).

Features of Gotemba Trail

  • The departure point is low in altitude and the slope is gentle. (The altitude difference between the departure point and the summit is large and covers a long-distance. This trail is suitable for hardy hikers)
  • It is exciting to go down the dynamic sunabashiri made of soft volcanic gravel.
  • There are fewer mountain lodges than on the other trails. (There are fewer toilets and resting places, and no facilities for emergencies)
  • This trail has the least number of climbers among the 4 trails, so you can enjoy a quiet climb.
  • You can see the sunrise from a high altitude on the ascending trail.
  • There are few landmarks on the trail, so it is easy to get lost at night or in thick fog.

Ascending

from New 5th Sta. to New 6th Sta.

  • Go under the torii gate next to the shop and go to the mountain trail.
  • The trail continues to climb gently over volcanic gravel, intersecting with bulldozer roads in several places.
  • It takes about 3 and a half hours from "Oishi-Chaya" hut to "Hanzobo" hut at the new 6th station, and there are no mountain huts or toilets.
  • There is nothing to block the sunlight, so you need to be careful about heatstroke.
  • There are few landmarks on the trail, so it is easy to get lost at night or in thick fog

from New 6th Sta. to Summit

  • It merges with the descending trail just before the 7th station. This descent route also leads to Mt. Hoei, so it also meets up with climbers coming up from the Fujinomiya Ent via the Hoei crater.
  • After passing the 8th station, you will begin to climb a steep, rocky slope.
  • Pass through the torii gate and arrive at the summit in front of Ginmeisui.
  • It takes about 5 minutes one way to reach the top of the Fujinomiya Trail, where Sengen Taisha's Okumiya shrine, post office, and public toilets are located.

Descending

from Summit to 7th Sta.

  • Descending the Gotemba Trail until the 7th station is the same way you climbed up.

from 7th Sta. to New 5th Sta.

  • Pass the 7th station "Hinode-kan" hut (closed) and go down the trail exclusively for descending the mountain.
  • At the 6th station of the descending trail ("downhill 6th station"), after passing the junction to the Hoei crater, you will enter the "Osuna Hashiri'' (long sandy slope).
  • Dense fog tends to form in this area, so be careful as it is easy to get lost at the junction.
  • You can also take the Fujinomiya route from "downhill 6th station" via the Hoei crater.
  • Once you pass "Oishi Chaya" hut, you will soon arrive at the Gotemba Ent New 5th Station.
